Kasaragod is known as the land of seven languages, and its businesses work in at least three of them before lunch. Microsoft 365 has translation built into the tools people already use — Outlook, Word and Teams — and Microsoft Translator covers Kannada and Malayalam. Used for understanding, it saves the daily forwarding of emails to whoever happens to read the other language. Used for anything you would sign, it needs a person who reads both. This page is about drawing that line clearly.
Four kinds of business we work with here
Kerala’s northernmost district, with Karnataka along most of its land border. Almost every business here deals with the other side of it, in the other side’s language.
Arecanut and coconut traders
Small offices, daily prices, and a good deal of the crop sold into Karnataka. Rates, confirmations and payment details arrive in Kannada as often as in Malayalam.
Fisheries and seafood businesses
Landing centres along the coast and buyers on both sides of the border. Speed matters more than polish, and messages go back and forth in whichever language the other side started in.
Shops and traders in the border towns
Uppala and Manjeshwaram serve customers from both states. Bills, notices and supplier correspondence end up in two or three languages without anyone planning it.
Firms with an office across the border
A Kasaragod business with staff in Mangaluru, or the other way round. One team, two states, and colleagues whose first language is not the same.

Outlook translates the message in place, or every incoming message automatically once it is switched on. Microsoft Translator covers Kannada and Malayalam, so the accounts team reads the gist in its own language without forwarding the mail to someone who happens to read both.
The agreement needs to exist in two languages
Word will translate the whole document into a new copy in a few seconds. That copy is a first draft, and nothing more, until someone who reads both languages has checked it line by line.
The team chat is in four languages at once
Teams can translate a chat message into the language each person has set for Teams, so everyone reads the thread their own way. Check which languages your team's Teams offers before relying on it for the ones that matter most to you.
Older Kannada files look like gibberish on our computers
They were typed in fonts that were not Unicode, so they display properly only where that exact font is installed — the same problem older Malayalam files have. New work should be typed in Unicode; old files need converting, not translating.

The second row is the one to look at before anything moves. Files that nobody can read today will be just as unreadable in the cloud.

Yes. Outlook and Word use Microsoft Translator, which covers Kannada and Malayalam as well as English (checked 25 September 2026). Outlook translates an email in place or automatically; Word translates a whole document into a separate copy; Teams translates chat messages into the language each person has set for Teams. No add-on is needed for any of this.

For understanding, usually yes. For anything you would sign, no. Machine translation gets the meaning of an email or a report across well enough to act on, but it can miss a negative, soften an obligation or misread a figure's context. Contracts, price agreements and legal notices need a person who reads both languages, with the machine version at most a first draft.

Yes. Each person can set Outlook to translate messages that arrive in other languages into their own, or to offer translation and wait to be asked. For a team whose mail arrives in three languages, automatic translation for the people who read only one of them saves the daily forwarding of emails to whoever reads the other.

Because they were typed in non-Unicode fonts, which draw Kannada letters over ordinary Latin characters and display correctly only where that exact font is installed. It is the same problem older Malayalam files have. Translation cannot fix it — the file does not contain Kannada text to translate. The fix is conversion to Unicode for the files that matter, and Unicode for everything new.

If your business runs on appointments, yes. Microsoft lists Bookings among the apps in Business Basic (checked 25 September 2026): it gives you a booking page customers can use from either side of the border, and sends confirmation emails so fewer appointments are simply forgotten. It suits professionals, clinics and service businesses; it adds little for a trading office.
