Wayanad is a district of small units — estates, homestays, agri-traders and the businesses around them. Very little here turns on headcount. The plateau above the ghats
Wayanad sits high on a plateau above the Western Ghats, reached by ghat roads and served by no railway of its own. Everything that leaves the district goes down a hill or across a state line.
Most of Kerala's coffee is grown here, along with a great deal of its pepper and ginger, and tea on the higher slopes. The other half of the economy arrives up the same ghat roads — resorts, homestays and the businesses built around people coming to see the place.
What Wayanad has very little of is large employers. It runs on small units: family estates, producer groups, forwarding agents, a dozen rooms and an owner. That is the operational fact worth designing around — and it is also the reason this page spends a section telling some readers not to buy anything yet.
The records somebody else reads
Coffee and spice increasingly sell on where they came from and how they were grown, and that is established on paper rather than in the cup. A certifier, a buyer's auditor or a bank does not ask whether your records exist. They ask you to produce them, on a date you were told about months earlier. Where those records live decides whether that is an afternoon or a fortnight.
A year's records, assembled once a year
Field notes, input records, harvest and despatch entries are created across a season by whoever happened to be there. They only exist as a set if somebody filed them as one. The alternative is a fortnight of reconstruction in the week before an inspection.
Owned by the company, not by a person
A Shared Drive belongs to the organisation rather than to whoever created the files. When records sit in a manager's personal account or on an estate laptop, they leave when he does — and the season he covered leaves with them.
An inspector gets view access, not a zip file
Sharing a folder read-only, covering the period asked for, is quicker than assembling an archive and safer than emailing one you then cannot recall. Access ends when you end it, which an attachment never does.
When a record was made is part of the record
Drive keeps version history, so it is visible when a file was created and when it changed. That is often worth more than the file itself on the day somebody queries a date.
None of this makes a record correct — only findable. It is worth knowing separately what happens if a season's folder is deleted, because the windows for getting it back are shorter than most people assume: that is set out on the backup and recovery page.
When you genuinely do not need this
A reseller with a page about a district of very small businesses ought to say where the line is. Three cases come up here constantly, and in all three the honest answer is less than we could sell you.
One person doing all the correspondence
A homestay with a few rooms, or a small estate office where the owner answers everything. One address on your own domain is genuinely worth having — it outlives a phone number and it reads as a business. Five licences for a team of one do not.
Where WhatsApp is already doing the job
Day-to-day coordination with a trader, a driver or a picking team works on a phone and email would not improve it. The thing worth moving off a phone is the record you will be asked for later, not the conversation you had this morning.
When there is nothing to move
No mailbox history worth keeping, no shared files, two people. That is a domain and a licence and an afternoon of your own time. We would rather tell you so than quote for it and have you find out afterwards.
The picture changes when
More than one person has to answer the same address.
Somebody leaves, and the correspondence leaves with them.
A buyer, a bank or a certifier asks for records from last season.
The records are worth more than the device they are sitting on.

Districts bordering Wayanad
Three within Kerala: Kozhikode at the foot of the Thamarassery ghat road, Malappuram to the south, Kannur to the north-west. The rest of the boundary is with Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, which is why a good deal of Wayanad's produce — and a good many of its visitors — move through Mysuru rather than through Kochi.

Google Workspace in Wayanad — common questions
Do you have an office in Wayanad?
No. Tech Geum works from Angadippuram in Malappuram district, south of here, and works with businesses across Wayanad remotely. For this kind of work that is not a constraint — domain verification, DNS and MX changes, tenant configuration, migration and admin handover are all done remotely, and none of them improve by somebody driving up the ghat road. What being in Kerala does give you is someone reachable during your own working day, in Malayalam if that is easier, who already knows how your setup is configured.
We run a homestay with three rooms. Do we need this at all?
Probably not in the way you are imagining. What is worth having is one address on your own domain rather than a personal Gmail — it reads as a business, it outlives a phone number, and it costs one licence. What is not worth having is a structure built for a team you do not have. The point at which it changes is when a second person starts answering the same address, or when you want the booking correspondence to survive somebody leaving. Until then, one licence is the honest answer and we will give you that answer rather than a larger quote.
Where should certification and field records live?
In a Shared Drive owned by the company, organised by season and by plot or lot, rather than in whoever's personal account created them. Can we give an inspector access without emailing files?
Yes, and it is the better way round. You share the relevant folder read-only, covering the period requested. They can open and read, not edit, and you remove the access when the inspection is over. An emailed archive cannot be recalled, gets forwarded, and is out of date the moment anything changes. Sharing also leaves a record of who had access and when, which an attachment does not.
Connectivity is poor in parts of the estate. Does that matter?
Less than people expect, because the records that matter are rarely written in the field. Notes taken on a phone where there is no signal upload when the phone reaches one, and the office work — filing, sharing, retrieval — happens where there is a connection. Plan for the estate office to be the place records land, not the plot.
We sell through traders and to buyers outside the state. Does email actually matter?
It matters at the point where somebody has to trust an address. A quote, a rate confirmation or an invoice from a personal Gmail is treated differently from one on your own domain, and mail from a domain with no SPF, DKIM or DMARC configured is markedly more likely to be filtered before it is read. If you are corresponding with buyers or agents outside Kerala, those records are worth getting right; if your entire trade is a handshake with a local buyer, they are not yet.
How is this priced?
Licences are at Google's India list price, invoiced in INR with GST against your GSTIN. Setup and migration are quoted as separate, explicit lines based on user count and what you are moving from, so you can see what each part costs rather than finding it folded into a rate. The requirement call and the quote are free, and if the call ends with us saying you do not need this yet, that is a legitimate outcome.
