Positioning First

Brand built without threatening contracts

Visitor Capture

Unit Economics

Checked honestly before anything is built

Own Label

Five realities of building a brand when you are a manufacturer

Kollam makes excellent product and captures a fraction of what it eventually sells for. Closing that gap is possible, and it is a genuinely different business rather than an extension of the one you run.

The Uncomfortable Question

If your own brand succeeds, does it compete with the customers whose contracts currently pay your wages? Answering that honestly comes before anything else.

01

You make the product and somebody else owns the customer

Contract processing is a good business with a ceiling. The brand on the packet captures the margin and the relationship, and no amount of processing excellence changes that.

02

Export capability does not equal retail capability

Shipping containers and shipping parcels are entirely different operations. Businesses that assume the second follows from the first are usually surprised by the cost of the difference.

03

Cold chain is where seafood retail lives or dies

One spoiled delivery costs more than the order — it costs the review and the reorder. Selling perishables without lane restrictions is a decision to lose money slowly.

04

Visitors buy once and disappear

Ashtamudi and the coast bring buyers with a genuine reason to reorder. Almost nobody captures them, and the relationship ends at the shop door.

05

Nobody owns the brand after the launch

An own-label brand is not a project with an end date. Where nobody internally carries it forward, it becomes a store with fifteen orders and a domain renewal.

Who We Work With

Kollam businesses we partner with, and the honest first step for each

A cashew processor and a Punalur timber supplier both want direct revenue, and the shortest path there is entirely different for each of them.

Consumer and trade payment options configured for a Kollam processor
Getting Paid

Serving a household and a trade buyer from one business

Consumers pay instantly by UPI; trade buyers expect terms and an invoice. Most Kollam businesses moving into retail configure for one and inadvertently exclude the other.

  • check_circle

UPI configured as the default rail and tested on the apps buyers use here

  • check_circle

Razorpay alongside Shopify Payments so cards and netbanking clear reliably

  • check_circle

Prepaid encouraged on perishables where a refusal means the goods are lost

  • check_circle

COD limited to lanes where returns data shows it is not costing you

  • check_circle

Subscription and reorder billing for staples households buy monthly

  • check_circle

Dealer and trade accounts invoiced on terms rather than card checkout

  • check_circle

Multi-currency display for overseas visitors reordering after a trip

  • check_circle

Settlements, gateway fees and refunds reconciled into your books monthly

Cold Chain

The rules that keep perishable retail from becoming refund work

Seafood and fresh product punish carelessness immediately. These constraints look restrictive on paper and are the reason the business stays profitable.

  • local_shipping

Cold-chain lanes verified before they are offered at checkout

  • local_shipping

Dispatch days aligned to your processing and packing schedule

Ownership

The point of own-label is owning things. Including this.

You are building a brand precisely so the customer relationship belongs to you rather than to whoever puts their name on the packet. That logic applies to your agency too.

  • lock_open

Shopify account and domain registered in your company name

  • lock_open

Theme code in a repository you own with our contributions documented

  • lock_open

Kollam FAQs

What processors here ask before committing

help

We process cashew for national brands. Should we launch our own?

expand_more
Sometimes, and it deserves a harder look than it usually gets. Own-label gives you margin and a customer relationship, but it also puts you in competition with the very brands whose contract volume pays your wages. Several Kollam processors have handled this by launching in a category or a channel their contract customers do not serve, or under a name not obviously connected to the factory. We would rather work through that positioning question properly than build a store that costs you a contract.
help

What does going own-label actually require that we do not already have?

expand_more
Mostly things outside the factory. Consumer packaging and label compliance rather than bulk cartons, a customer service function you currently do not need, courier handling for single parcels, photography and content, and someone who owns the commercial decisions. The manufacturing is the part you already do best. We map the missing pieces before anything is built, because that list is what determines whether this is a good idea for you.
help

Our seafood side is entirely export. Is there a domestic retail business in it?

expand_more
There is a real one, and it has grown considerably. Indian households buy cleaned, frozen and ready-to-cook seafood online in volumes that did not exist a few years ago. The constraint is cold chain rather than demand — the store has to restrict delivery to lanes where the chain genuinely holds, and packaging costs have to be priced in rather than absorbed. Done carefully it is a good business; done casually it is a refund machine.
help

Ashtamudi brings visitors who buy from us once. Can we keep them?

expand_more
That is one of the more overlooked opportunities in this district. A visitor who bought cashew or coir from you has already tried the product and has a reason to reorder. What is missing is capture at the point of sale with attribution intact, and a follow-up written for someone who has used what you make. Overseas visitors especially will keep reordering for years if it is made easy for them.
help

Coir and cashew in one company. Should they share a store?

expand_more
Rarely, because the buyers share nothing. A household buying cashew and a buyer sourcing coir matting have different needs, different pricing structures and different shipping realities. Where one company owns both, we usually build two focused stores rather than one that navigates badly for everyone. If budget forces a single store, we keep them as clearly separated product types with their own templates and shipping rules.
help

How do we compete with the big cashew brands on price?

expand_more
You mostly should not try. Their scale advantage is real and permanent. What you have that they do not is direct provenance — a specific processing unit, specific grades, and the ability to sell grades and formats a mass brand will not stock. Freshness and grade transparency beat price competition for the buyers worth having. Brands here that lead with the lowest price end up in a race they were never structured to win.
help

Who runs the store day to day if we take this on?

expand_more
Your side handles product, stock and customer conversations because you know the business. We hold pricing rules, shipping configuration, integrations, performance and the improvement backlog. What genuinely does not work is nobody internally owning it — an own-label brand needs someone whose job includes caring about it, even part-time. We would rather establish that before starting than discover it in month four.
help

How long before an own-label brand contributes meaningfully?

expand_more
Longer than most people hope. The store can be live in weeks, but building recognition for a new consumer brand takes quarters, not months. What we can accelerate is the operational side and the first repeat customers. We would set expectations around a year to a meaningful revenue line, with early progress measured in repeat rate and unit economics rather than headline sales.
